ISOLDE The dark brown and white equine carefully trots through the misty area. She shivers because of the cold, but also because of the eerie feeling that descends over the section of land like a blanket. She snorts softly, pausing as the ground beneath her transitions into soft sand. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself as she slowly walked to the edge of the water. There as nothing here that would hurt her. She would hear if someone approached her, right? And she couldn't hear the sounds of canines walking in the nearby woods. She was fine, she was okay. She sighed slowly, lowering her head to the water and taking a slow drink. The water was cold and crisp, making her shiver. She lifted her head back up and watched the shadows carefully. She didn't know where she was going, hoping that she wasn't terribly lost. She looked to the skies, squinting through the mist and barely making out the moon that hung high in the sky. She shivered again, but not because of the cold. They were out there, she knew, lurking in the shadows and preying on the unfortunate. She wouldn't be the victim, not like her family had been. She would be strong and smart, and avoid the evil creatures. She turned around with a flick of her tail, her head held high and she picked up a trot once again. She would not be controlled by her fears. Though she knew as soon as she heard something in the shadows, all of her confidence would drain and she would be frozen before quickly fleeing. She couldn't face the wolves as her family had. She would always be a runner, never a fighter. Her head dipped forward, her mane tossing up and then back down against her neck. She whickered softly, content to live in the moment and not worry about the darkness around her. She was fine, there were no threats nearby. She would be okay.

Bon moved along at a bouncy trot, the cool night air pumping through his lungs. He had said goodbye to Tari, and he was off on a new adventure. Perhaps there would be more horses along the way?
He still lingered in the north lands out of loyalty to the golden queen, but he had moved east and then west since then, slowly working his way to the southern border. He emerged from the silvery woods, seeing a small river ahead, bathed in both fog and moonlight. As his eyes adjusted, Bon saw deep brown, almost black patches hovering in the mist. What in the world...? He drew closer, curious. Now he could see that it was a mare, white, splashed with deep brown. He smiled. Another equine, so soon! He lengthened his short strides and approached.
"Good evening." He bobbed his head, throwing his inky forelock over his eyes. Friendly, but not too friendly. He would see how she reacted before continuing. Perhaps he would have a new companion. 170 words O.o mini post

ISOLDE "Good evening," someone said. Isolde skittered to the side, sand flying up under her feet and she slid to a stop, her head twisting to look at the equine who had spoken. She forced herself to take a breath, pulling herself back into a standing position instead of her legs spread out on the ground. Good gosh, she needed to be more aware of her surroundings. She took another breath, calming her beating heart. It was just another equine, not a wolf. It was fine, she'd be okay. "Hello." she said, standing a small distance away. Her tension was draining away and being replaced by curiosity. "You know, you might scare someone sneaking up like that." she said jokingly. Now that she knew there were no threats, she could relax. "I'm Isolde." She stated, throwing it out there before he would awkwardly ask. Her more friendly side was being pulled to the forefront with the appearance of a stranger.

The second he spoke, the mare seemed to jump a mile in the air, clearly spooked. He took a step back in surprise, heart racing from the start she had given him. Had she not heard him coming?
The mare regained her composure and spoke. "Hello." She smiled, relaxing visibly now that she could see that he wasn't whatever she thought he'd been, he assumed. "You know, you might scare someone, sneaking up like that," she added, seeming half serious, half joking. "Really? I'm not so sure about that. I'm not exactly what many would call...intimidating." He laughed, gesturing down at his small body. He normally wouldn't poke fun at his own appearance, but he felt comfortable enough with her to do so. "I'm Isolde," the paint mare stated, introducing herself. "Bonaparte," he replied, "but you can call me Bon if you prefer." He laughed softly again. "It might be easier to remember. Either way though, I apologize for startling you earlier. Were you waiting for someone?"

ISOLDE Bon. She repeated in the back of her mind, remembering the name. "Either way though, I apologize for startling you earlier. Were you waiting for someone?" Isolde laughed softly and shook her head. "Oh, no." She replied, her face falling as she looked to the shadows, "Just a bit afraid of the dark is all." She smiled slightly, returning her attention to the stag. He was a full hand shorter than she, his smaller form being the standard for his obvious lineage. He seemed nice enough, definitely not someone you would spook at, though of course if anyone would, it would be her. She jumped slightly when the sound of a faraway wolf howling at the moon echoed into the air. It was nowhere near them, anyone could tell by how faint the sound was, but it still frightened her. She forced herself to stay calm and focus on her conversation with the stallion. "What about you? Are you afraid of anything?" she asked, the first thing that came to her mind. Was he afraid of them too?

"Oh, no. And just a bit afraid of the dark is all."
The paint mare smiled briefly at him and he followed her gaze, straightening and arching his neck ever so slightly when it landed on him. He was enjoying the attention and pretending not to notice when Isolde spooked again, this time at a faint howl coming from the east. Bon was about to tilt his head questioningly, for the wolf was quite a ways away, but she spoke before he could ask. "What about you? Are you afraid of anything?" What sort of question was that? Wasn't everybody afraid of something? Then again, there were those seemingly fearless types that never showed fear of anything...definitely not him. But was was he afraid of? Wolves, he supposed, but only when they were an immediate threat. Natural disasters, perhaps, but the same standard applied there too. He knew though that he'd experienced fear, so he must be afraid of something...he thought back, trying to dredge up memories if times he'd been afraid. It wasn't an entirely pleasant experience, and he struggled to keep his face expressionless as he remembered.
The memories where he had been most afraid were those of loss, of abandonment, of confrontation and anger. Of being alone and vulnerable, of not understanding, of rejection. He wasn't about to share those with her! Perhaps he could think of another time when he had been afraid, there must have been something recent...ah! when the tree had fallen on Rasta, he had been afraid! Perfect, that would do for something to tell Isolde.
"Everybody's afraid of something, aren't they?" he answered, repeating his thoughts out loud in response to the mare's question. "One of my fears, for example, is seeing others injured. I once saw a tree struck down by lightning badly wound a mare standing underneath, and though miraculously she survived, it gave me a very bad scare." He bobbed his head gently in emphasis, sending his dark forelock over his brown eyes again. Pleased with himself for finding a different fear so smoothly, he gave a little prance in place, sending up the tiniest splash. Time to change the subject now, keep her talking. "But let us not dwell on the bad; tell me, Isolde, what makes you happy?" He must avoid getting too serious, after all seriousness led to confrontation. And that was something he did not want at all.

ISOLDE He seemed to really think about her question, not really knowing how to answer it. Of course, it was an easy question for her because of her past expirences. She wasn't that afraid of many things, but the few things she was scared of, scared her to death. After fleeing the wolves when she was younger, being lost and alone with no indication of what happened to her family, she would never be the same. Yes, she still had her loving and protective side, the one that jumped at the chance to help others and easily transitioned into a motherly figure. That was still there. But when the sun set and the moon rose, when she could hear them howling and leaving their homes to terroize another family; that was when she lost all control. Her heartbeat would quicken and she would hastily find someplace that seemed safe enough. Some days, of course, were better than others, but she was always afraid.
"Everybody's afraid of something, aren't they?" Bonaparte answered her question. "One of my fears, for example, is seeing others injured. I once saw a tree struck down by lightning badly wound a mare standing underneath, and though miraculously she survived, it gave me a very bad scare." Her eyes widened at the scene that played through her mind. And she had survived? Isolde knew she would have been shaken up a bit also. She nodded in understanding, knowing that she hated seeing others hurt as well. she always had, from a very young age. "But let us not dwell on the bad; tell me, Isolde, what makes you happy?"
What made her happy? Now it was her turn to think. She loved the sun, and the sounds of water crashing down into a river and onto rocks. She liked to lay around in a field and do nothing for hours, content to just breathe and not think about anything. But what made her happy? She wasn't sure. She let out a breath, looking at the ground. "I suppose..." she pasued, her face twisting as she tried to think. "I guess.. Being a part of something?" she said, the statement coming out like a question. She really didn't know, but it was as close as she was going to get. She liked to be part of a family, to have people around her, to feel important, somehow. To know that if someone needed help with something, they would come to her first, because they knew she would try her hardest. "And.. Helping," she added, "I like to be able to help others as best as I can." she laughed, knowing it probably sounded stupid, but she did. "I was always sort of a second motherly figure, I suppose." she sighed, lifting her head and looking into the distance. She wished she could return to those days.

"I suppose...I guess...being part of something?"
Bon's ears pricked involuntarily. It was if she knew what he was thinking. What made her happy was the opposite of his deepest fears. If he was terrified of being alone, of not being part of something, what made her happiest was what made him most secure as well. He laughed softly to himself, for Isolde had just made him happy simply by telling him what made her happy. Because they shared something, she had just made him a part of something. Didn't he love how that worked? But he was overthinking and she was speaking again.
"And...helping. I like to be able to help others as best as I can. I was always sort of a second motherly figure, I suppose."
Helping? He supposed he liked that too. Certainly admirable in her; he wasn't sure if it was really something that made him happy... Isolde sighed, raising her delicate head and gazing off beyond them. His eyes were drawn to her wistful face and he felt the mood shift the tiniest bit to one of sadness. Mustn't get too serious again, he must keep her spirits light as well as his own. He was losing her attention. Bon moved a little to his left, lightly bumping into her to catch her attention. "Helping is a noble thing, to be sure. In fact, since it seems to be your gift, would you mind ever so terribly, helping me?" Lowering his head and looking up at her through his long forelock, he trained his large brown eyes on her face. "You see, I'm not really familiar with the area, and I was wondering if you knew of a good place to take shelter for the night? I would be so grateful." He addressed her with mock seriousness, eyes sparkling.
He then shook his head and raised it, nudging her shoulder playfully before prancing a few steps forward. "But if you are not familiar with the area yourself, perhaps you would do me the favor of accompanying me on my great quest?" He laughed softly again, wondering if she would play along. idk. like 350?

ISOLDE He gently bumped into her, bringing her attention back to the present and their conversation. She smiled lighty in appreciation, not wanting to think about those things. "Helping is a noble thing, to be sure. In fact, since it seems to be your gift, would you mind ever so terribly, helping me?" She tilted her head as if to say, "Oh?" as he dipped his, looking up at her through the mask of his fore hairs. She couldn't help but smile wider at the gesture, suppressing laughter. It reminded her of the foals she used to look after, though these were good memories, not tainted like most of the others. He was slightly shorter than her as it was, and that added to the effect. "You see, I'm not really familiar with the area, and I was wondering if you knew of a good place to take shelter for the night? I would be so grateful," he asked, and she couldn't contain the small laugh that came out that time. The way he pretended like it was a serious subject to be handled, as if it was of greatest importance at the moment.
Then he lifted his head, shaking his hair out of his face, reminding her that he was indeed not a little foal that needed her protection. He nudged her shoulder lightly, dancing forward, throwing an invitation over his shoulder. "But if you are not familiar with the area yourself, perhaps you would do me the favor of accompanying me on my great quest?" He laughed, obviously enjoing the little game. She laughed again, leaving a small smile on her face. "Well of course, good sir," she said, gracefully dancing forward to join him, "Though, I shall admit, I'm just as lost as you are. I do think this quest would be greatly received." She giggled, never realizing how fun it was to just, be. To play a game with someone. She had always taken the harder path and grown up rather quickly, giving the less fortunate their chance to be young. She had never had that. And it wasn't as if she was old by any means, at five, almost six years. The fun years were going to pass her by if she didn't seize them. She danced a few steps forward, turning and looking back at Bon, tossing her head to the side. "Lead the way, mighty companion," she said, smiling again. She wanted to be young again, before it was too late.

Isolde giggled as he spoke, gliding forward at his invitation. "Well of course, good sir! Though, I shall admit, I'm just as lost as you are. I do think this quest would be greatly received." She had reached his side now, and they stood wither to wither, looking out ahead of them. "Lead the way, mighty companion. He turned to her and nodded in mock seriousness before starting out in a slow, exaggerated prance, mimicking a soldier's march on a mission. "Forward, good lady. We advance!"
Bon swung into an easy canter, kicking up water along the riverbed and heading east. The fresh night air flowed through his lungs, and he threw his head back in enjoyment. After what was perhaps a mile, he slowed and surveyed the territory around them. "Now then, my lady, what shall it be?" he asked grandly. "I myself would prefer a large tree over a cave, but I shall oblige if you have any suggestions." BLEH SO SHORT. Just like Bon xP
