Lao nodded, understanding what she meant.

"I'm glad you didn't," he chuckled gently, reaching out to brush her dripping forelock from her eyes. He waded the rest of the way out with her, easing into a walk along the sand to stretch out their muscles in the chill. They wandered along aimlessly, simply happy to be in each other's company. And then she turned to him with trusting eyes, asking him if he wanted a family.

He stopped, wrapping his neck around her in a loose embrace. "You are my family, love. The first real family I've ever had. Know, Repla, that you are all I need."

Lao continued, voice steady. "But, Repla, when you are ready...when you are ready, yes, I'd love children of our own. I'd love to see you a mother, and me a father. I'd love to look at you on winter nights like this across the back of our sleeping foal and know that I am home wherever you are."

He nuzzled at her face, heart full. "Only...Repla. You know I have no land. No place for us to raise this child. Yes, we have the whole island, but no piece of ground that we can truly call our own. We must remember that."

Repla bobbed her head, curling it up against his chest and closing her eyes. She was ready, she wanted this family. Her rabbit bounced up and down around her. Something will go wrong. Something always does. The war... I sense a war breaking out again. It's been too calm... it warned her. But she didn't listen. Slipping out of his embrace she shifted around, allowing her tail to raise up and hang off to the side. She didn't even know what she was supposed to do, but it was all instinct anyways so that much didn't matter. A bit of her scent was released and she bobbed her head. "I am ready, Lao..." she whispered before backing up so that the tip of her raised tail brushed him in the maw. She was ready... and she dearly wanted a child... a little foal running around. And she wouldn't lose him. He wouldn't leave her. She knew he wouldn't. He wouldn't leave her, especially not to defend herself. No. She knew she had him, and that he was hers...

She was ready, and so was he. He nuzzled her face once more, gazing calmly into her eyes as she brushed past him, standing in front of him now. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply, laying his muzzle briefly on her back. With the scent came the promise of their future together, of dreams fantastic and unfulfilled, of the long spring night that would await them if she was to carry his child.

He did his job quickly, dropping to her side within minutes. "Here's hoping, Repla. Remember that if it doesn't work out, you are all I need."

Running his muzzle from her hip to her ear, he whispered, "I love you, Repla." Brushing against her in an attempt to warm them both, he added, "And, darling, I'll try not to wander off this time..."

Repla shifted, turning to face him as she smiled. "I love you to my warrior..." she whispered, resting her head against his shoulder. Her insides were tingling with happiness at his touch and she felt much more connected to him than she ever had before. "shall we find somewhere warm for now?" she questioned a chill spilling down her spine as she closed her eyes trying to push it away. It was too cold. "it is much too cold out here," she whispered, looking towards the edge of the beach where a nearby cave loomed.

He nodded, gently guiding her shivering form towards the cave ahead. It was a large arched cave, almost like a cathedral, where the music of the surf boomed and echoed. "Here, love." Lao gestured toward an indent in the sand. "Lie down." He covered her with soft sand, digging in the ground with his front hoof until he reached the layer below that was still warm from the sun. She would be cozy the whole night through. He settled down next to her, closing his eyes and waiting for morning.

Laoch awakened at the warm touch of sunlight filtering into the cave and onto his face. He nuzzled Repla playfully before getting up and shaking the sand off of his body. Walking slowly out into the sunshine, he stretched and whinnied, swinging into a euphoric gallop along the shore. Remembering Repla and knowing she was bound to worry should she wake, he turned and swung back up the stretch of beach, taking a slight detour to nibble on some of the grass that grew at the edge of sand. Yanking a mouthful of the hardy plants from the ground, he trotted back to Repla, who still lay in the cave.

"Morning, love. Brought you something!"

He dropped the grass near her head and nosed some of the sand off of her. "Wake up, sleepyhead!"

Repla curled up tighter in the sand, allowing the warmth to flow through her body as dreams rocked in and out of her body. She awoke to the sound of hoofbeats and Laos whinny piercing the air. Flashes of him leaving filled her mind and she squeezed her eyes shut before he reappeared, nudging her. Blinking a couple of times she saw the grass laying down in front of her. "Ah. My Lao. Why thank you..." she said shaking off some of the sand before standing. "and it worked. We have a little foal," she whispered, a smirk in her eyes while her bunny sulked, believing her to be insane. Gently, she leaned down and began to munch on the grass before her.

The words escaped her lips and he inhaled quickly, pulling air into his lungs. He needed to pull it together. This was really happening. He and Repla were starting a new life together. "How...how do you know?" he whispered awkwardly. Goodness, being a father was really making him out of it. She's not in heat anymore, idiot, a voice whispered in the back of his mind. Way to ask the wrong question!

"I mean...that's wonderful, Repla." He nosed her cheek, running his lips curiously down her neck to her side. "You mean...our baby...Repla, we're having a baby! Next spring...a foal of our own..."

His head was spinning, envisioning the future: Repla, glowing with happiness, a gangly foal sleeping beside her; telling the baby the old stories; watching it grow...
"Oh, Repla. Every day's a new adventure with you, isn't it?" He turned to her, smiling, only to see that she was in tears. Oh. Oh, no. Had he said the wrong thing?

Normally so calm, he panicked. "Repla, I'm sorry, did I say something to upset you? Oh love, whatever I said, I didn't mean it like that! Don't cry, don't cry, it'll be all right!"

Repla let out a tiny laugh as he panicked. "Its okay Lao. Its okay," she whispered, choking on her tears for a moment. "Im just really happy thats all," she explained, nudging him playfully in the shoulder and swishing her tail in his face. Quietly she trotted out of the cave. "Catch me if you can!" she called behind her before lunging forwards into a full out gallop and speeding down the beach, kicking up sand in her wake. The golden sunrise reflecting off of her roan coat and causing it to radiate a warmth she had rarely seen before. A warmth she had rarely ever felt. The wind whipping at her mane and slapping her forelock against her forehead. She felt free and careless. She had Lao with her...

He sighed in relief, the tension draining from his body. She surprised him once again, slipping past him into the sunshine, breaking into a run. "Catch me if you can!" He laughed and raced after her, long strides carrying him towards her. The motions were so familiar, like their game of tag that one night last summer. Back then, before he knew that he loved her, before he knew that he wanted this family. Before she trusted him and before he promised her that he would be there forever. Yes, the game was familiar, but how his world had changed!

Laoch bugled in joy, letting his churning legs carry him beside his mate and towards their future.
