Whisky's breathing was slow, calm. Ava jerked her head up suddenly with a clap of thunder. Whisky looked around at her as she came over and nudged him softly. He smiled softly and nudged her back, before resting his head on the soft spongy moss. He took one last look around the room before the darkness sourounded him.
Screams, screams of terror. The smell of blood everywhere. Dead bodies scattered across the battlefield. Where was his mom? His dad? The herd? Whisky ran, eyes rolling, his screams blending in with the others. A cold body below him. Looking down. That face too familiar.. one that looked like his. His mothers. A searing pain across his neck, and he was falling, falling forever... something was blocking his eyes.....
Whisky awoke with a jerk. Sunlight was sneaking in the cave. His body was shaking. Ava and the other stag were still here. He put his head back down, his sides heaving. It had seemed so real. it did every time. Sleep was always avoided, becuase of that reason. Even 6 years later. Still so real, so fresh.
It was morning. Whisky looked out, and gasped. It was all clear, except for a few shrivveled black trees somehow still standing. No more grass. The fire had just gotten bigger. The sky mocked the scene below, no clouds, but cold. Still cold. Fall was chilly this year, and the winter would be brutual. But that would come later. Whisky had to stay in the present.

She awoke to the choking odor of smoke. Instinctively alarmed, she skittered sideways, narrowly missing Whisky's head. Whisky. The cremello stag. Their presence unnerved her a bit; it had been a while since she'd been in the company of others and she wasn't used to waking up in the immediate vicinity of another animal. Well...not any more. Rhyn...His name floated into her head, an constant echo of thoughts such as this.
Catching her breath, she saw that Whisky was awake. Taking tiny steps nearer to him, she pricked her ears and spoke, her voice a whisper. "Good morning, Whisky...I hope I didn't wake you--" She sucked in her breath suddenly; had the ground just quivered beneath their hooves? It was nothing. It was nothing."--I hope I didn't wake you," she continued softly, running her muzzle down his neck to his shoulder, "did you sleep well?"
Before he could answer, she pulled away, a feeling of electricity snapping at her nose, coursing through her veins and making her hair stand on end. Something was off, and it was making her nervous. She must stay calm. It was nothing. Ava tried again. "Whisky?" she asked, with just the slightest forced giggle. "Whisky, who is...that?" She aimed her gaze at the cremello at the back of the cave, apparently still dozing. Her curiosity, dormant last night, had been aroused, and she wanted to know the identity of this new stranger. Besides, stags liked to answer things, didn't they? Or perhaps that only applied to some of them. Others didn't talk much at all...
The unease settled in again, distracting Ava from her swirling thoughts and bringing her back to the present. Something was poking at her, prickling at the back of her mind, but what was it? Was she the only one feeling this? Perhaps she was finally going insane after all.

Ava started taking slow measured steps towards him. 'Good morning, Whisky...I hope I didn't wake you--' She sucked in her breath suddenly-- 'I hope I didn't wake you,' she continued softly, running her muzzle down his neck to his shoulder, 'did you sleep well?' Before Whisky could open his mouth to answer, she snapped away.
'No, no, just a bad dream. I slept okay.' He smiled meekly at her. 'Whisky? Whisky... who is that?' She asked, indintating the cremello stag. 'I'm not sure....' He said, glancing at the still dozing mystery stag.
As soon as the light came, it started to get really dark really fast. An un-natural speed. Soon it was black, and Whisky couldn't even barely see his own tail, and just the tip of Ava's nose. The wind started howling, snarling, whipping, lashing at Whisky. Whisky stood up suddenly. 'Ava? Ava? Are you okay?' Whisky could barely see his own nose anymore, and the ground beneath him was unstable, throwing him into an unknown horse- probably Ava. Whisky's breathing started to rise, and his panic chocked back the words he was trying to say. Darkness, howling wind, screams of terror- NO. WHisky would not be sucked under, and he stood on the unstable ground, before one mighty shake launched him off his feet and skidding into the side of the jagged wall. 'AVA! Ava! Get to the back of the cave!' Whisky scrambled up and slammed into a warm body, he didn't know who but pushed it to the back of the cave, Whisky could smell the other two, and he stood in front of them, the wind still howling, the earth still shaking. Yet no rain. Total darkness. Whisky couldn't see anything. It never got this dark, never, except for when the Alphas had lashed at fought each other. Whisky could not make the ground in front of himself out, and total darkness in-gulfed him as he was pulled under.

His dreams were rather calm, considering the closeness of the flames; billowing smoke just outside the cave the three had chosen to take shelter in. It was almost as if that time in the West was replaying itself. Hopefully nothing bad would come of this though. Again, his dreams were rather calm. Everything was rendered from his imagination though, nothing real. But, that was a good thing, I suppose, because then there was nothing there to scare him or frighten him. He slept relatively soundly for the first time in a while and it felt good to actually sleep. Though, the ground started to shake a bit and he was roused from the sleep, blinking in the darkness of the cave. He could smell the smoke from the fire last night and he grimaced, snorting softly. The other two horses were awake, though he couldn't see them for but a moment before the light was sucked away and there was nothing but darkness. He whickered in fear, the sound small and almost inaudiable but for achoing off the cavern walls. He could hear the wind pick up, howling and whipping outside the cave, grabbing at his skin as it reached inside. "Ava? Ava? Are you okay?" he heard the other stag call. The ground started to shake again and fear shot through Keanu. Another earthquake? What was going on?! "AVA! Ava! Get to the back of the cave!" He felt a body come towards him, was that the mare, Ava as the stag had been calling her? He lowered his head, pushing himself against the cave wall in an attempt to stand still through this. At least the ceiling wasn't falling like it had the first time, in the South. He hear a thud as something fell to the gound, was that the stag? Chills ran up his spine as the temperature dropped around them. What was going on?
Suddenly the shaking stopped and Keanu wobbled for a moment, regaining his footing. The sudden change had thrown him off balance. He took a step forward, trying to see something in the darkness. An eerie feeling crept over his skin, making him shiver and pull his head up. A light appeared in the cave, out of nowhere, lighting it up with a reddish hue. Keanu jumped backward, bumping into the other horse and quickly moving away. He eyed the strange orb, watching as it came closer to him. The shape started to change, molding into something else. Then, it exploded. Keanu scrambled away, unsure as to what was going on. "Oh, Keanuuuuuu!" a voice called, followed by a manic laugh. He froze, his eyes wide as he turned to look around the cave. An equine form suddenly appeared in the middle of the cave, in the same reddish hue as before. "Did ya miss me?!" she said, smiling wickedly. "Because I have missed you, my son." Keanu's breathing esculated as he stared at her, in this ghostly form, here to haunt him even more.
"You aren't going to say anything?" she asked, stepping towards him. He glared at her. "I thought I tought you better than to ignore a lady's presence." She smiled at him and he began to grow angry. "You are not my mother," he hissed, "And your lessons mean nothing to me." She laughed, shaking her head. "Oh but they do, they do; don't they? You can't forget them no matter how hard you try. Your very body cannot forget them. Do you forget what happened in the West already?" He didn't answer, only wanted as she turned away, looking down at the stag on the ground. "Did you do this too?" she asked, tilting her head and looking back at Keanu. "You forgot to kill him off, son. Knocking him unconscious will do nothing." She shook her head disapprovingly. "I'm not your son!" he said, anger clear in his voice. "Oh yes," she said, stepping towards him again, "You are. You cannot deny that I have made you who you are today. And that anger? I put it there, and I tought you how to use it." She smiled, turning to look at the mare in the back of the cave. "How 'bout a little show for mommy? Kill her, please?" Keanu struck out at her form, the ghost parting easily and disappearing. Her laugh echoed through the cave and she appeared a few strides away. "You can't get rid of me that easily."

And suddenly, the sky darkened, and the wind tore at her mane. She could hear Whisky faintly, could barely make out the words...."Ava? Ava? Are you okay? AVA! Ava! Get to the back of the cave!" The warning washed over her like a light summer rain, something to notice, but not something to heed. For how could she heed him when she must go in the opposite direction? A glowing form had appeared at the mouth of the cave, drawing her closer, wanting to believe so badly it was who she thought it was and knowing in the back of her mind that she was, beyond a doubt, right. Rhyn stood before her, the angry wind only lightly tousling his short mane. She nickered, straining against the gale to reach him. His merry, boyish laugh made her laugh too, but her own, intended to be joyous, emerged from her lips sounding eerie and hysterical. Ava shook her head, trying to escape the sounds of her own voice. She must not frighten him off. Already, his smile had faltered, and he looked at his mother uncertainly, startled by the ghoulish noise she had produced. No, he must not go!
She felt as if she were underwater as she moved towards him; her movements were slow and thick, and her ears felt plugged. Sounds were muffled, and the noise of the shrieking wind, instead of deafening her, faded into obsolete background murmuring. "Rhyn..." Her words came out garbled. She tried again. "Don't go!" This time, they came out as a high-pitched, nightmarish command, lacking all of the soft urgency that she had tried to convey. Her son eyed her nervously, as if considering backing and fleeing into the night at the monster that was his mother. His form flickered.
Please, Rhyn...! Oh, I tried to warn you, love, I tried, my darling...! It isn't your fault you know, it isn't your fault, but come back now...come back..." Oh horror, she had wanted to coo it, to reach out and feel her baby's fuzzy hide under her longing muzzle, but the apology came out as a mournful wail. Fear crossed his young face, and the phantom that was Rhyn began to move away from her.
"Wait, Rhyn! Wait!"
It was too much. He turned tail and cantered slowly into the night. She tried to follow; she did her best to catch him, bolting from the cave and into the charred field, burned wood splintering beneath her hooves and scraping her fragile legs. She would catch him this time; her son had returned to her; if only she could catch him, he'd be all right! She'd be all right.
A bolt of lightning lit up the sky, seeming to stab straight through Rhyn's ethereal body. He flickered and vanished as the sky sucked the electric energy back up into its tight embrace. Ava collapsed, sobbing, and the world reawakened with a deafening thunderclap. There was noise, noise all around her, but there was no Rhyn. The sickening reality came to her as she tried desperately to cling to his memory; Rhyn was dead and gone, and he had never been there. She had been the only one who could see him; it had all been in her mind. She would forever be chasing him, but she would never get him back.
Ava lay there in the stormy, blackened field, not caring what happened to her. Perhaps she was insane. Or was this how grieving felt?

Keanu shivered, Ember's form shimmering in front of him and watching distastefully as the mare became delusional, repeating the name Rhyn over and over again. Ember shook her head back and forth, turning back to Keanu. He watched her form disappear into the darkness outside of the cave and then quickly returned his attention to his own ghost. "What a pity. Perhaps you should put the poor thing out of her misery?" She smiled wickedly and stepped towards him. He grimaced, narrowing his eyes at her ghastly form. "I will not do anything that you ask of me, you cannot make me. You are not my mother" He hissed the word, throwing it in her face. Maybe this was a good thing, to be able to actually communicate with his enemy, instead of the small attacks in his mind that were mostly made up or memories. This was her, and he could lash out against her; although not physically, as he had already tried. She narrowed her own eyes at him, glaring at him. "I am as much of a mother as you will ever have," she started, her anger clear in her voice, though he interrupted her. "I'd rather not have a mother." he said and she stopped, ears flickering back before she tried to strick out at him this time. Of course her form parted as it touched him and did no harm. He shivered though, a coldness seeping into his body and then quickly pulled out as she retreated. She huffed, and he could have sworn he heard her growl.
"You know, you were always a disappointment to me," she said and he glared at her. He didn't care if he was a disappointment. In fact, he'd rather be a disappointment than someone she was proud of, knowing what actions would influence that pride. "You showed such promise, but you inherited her morals and intelligence." She hissed, angry. Keanu stood tall and proud, not wondering what she meant to accomplish from telling him this. "Though, now she is most likely dead, just like your father, and you have no chance to know them as you have known me." She smiled wickedly, "We only have each other Keanu. Look at you, you'll be alone for the rest of your life. No one will understand like I do. No one will love you like I do," she stared at him, a small smile on her face. Keanu narrowed his eyes. He shook his head defiantly. "It doesn't matter. Being alone is better than being anywhere near you." His voice seemed to growl with the anger that he held. He wished he could strike her, but that would only bring her pleasure at the fact that he was attacking someone. And she was a ghost, so doing so wouldn't accomplish anything. She stepped forward until she was standing right in from of him, "You will never be rid of me, my son," she whispered, her figure trailing away in a sudden burst of wind that rustled his mane and tail. He stood there, shaking in the sudden darkness as he stared at the ground. No, he wouldn't be rid of her, no matter how hard he tried.

Ava suddenly screamed out, 'Rhyn.... Don't go!' her voice was high-pitched, and Whisky tried to find her, 'Ava? Ava, are you okay?' Whisky's ears flickered toward her voice, 'Please, Rhyn...! Oh, I tried to warn you, love, I tried, my darling...! It isn't your fault you know, it isn't your fault, but come back now...come back...' Warn him? Who was Rhyn?
'Wait, Rhyn! Wait!' And then Whisky saw it, a soft glowing figure of a foal running out of the cave. Ava suddenly bolted after him and Whisky called out, 'Ava!' Whisky ran to the edge of the cave in time to see Ava collapse and Whisky bolted out to her. 'Ava... are you okay? Are you hurt? She lay there sobbing, and the darkness was fading, and the sun was rising, a nice pale gold, Whisky nuzzled Ava's neck softly, comforting her. 'Ava...' Whisky trailed, he didn't know what to say the the poor mare. Both of their legs had nicks and deep scratches from running out into the charred tree's that had broke apart. Whisky closed his eyes and imagined them without the wounds, and when he opened them both of their legs were healed. Whisky was surprised with himself. How had he done that?! Maybe he was just imagining it... Whisky reached down and ran his muzzle across his front leg, it was smooth. Whisky whinnied to Ava softly. It didn't look comftorable laying in the shards of burnt trees.
The sun was warm on his back, and Whisky reached down and nuzzled Ava's neck and shoulder again, his soft maw running along her pelt, comforting her, hoping she would be okay.

AVA
She was lying on her side. The sun was shining. It was warm...and someone's muzzle was running along her pelt, back and forth, back and forth...she giggled softly.
"Rhyn, stop it honey, mommy's sleeping!" Her laughter mixed with his, interrupting the scolding. She opened an eye lazily, rolling onto her chest and tousling the hair of the tiny foal who was so determined to wake her. "Get over here, you!" He chortled and scampered away, daring her to chase him. She scrambled to her feet, play-charging towards him. Practically still a child herself at age three, she didn't mind a game or two. The rest of the herd looked up briefly at their game, the older mares shaking their heads sleepily. The rising sun cast the pair in silhouettes as she caught up to him, pulling him close. He giggled and began to suckle greedily. "I love you Rhyn...I love you..."
"I love you..." [/i] she murmured softly, still half asleep. The muzzle stopped, and her eyes jerked open in horror. Who was there??! She scrambled to her feet, noting in confusion her healed legs. What was going on? And why was Whisky lying there with that expression on his face? In a panic, she backed, stumbling on the charred wood that surrounded them. "What are you doing?' she half-shrieked at him, stomping the ground and swishing her tail in irritation. If he had tried anything... And now, another realization hit her. As she swished her tail, she realized that this morning had gone from bad to worse. It was horribly, horribly wrong. She was in heat. She was in heat, alone, in the middle of who-knew-where with two stags. "Don't look at me like that!" she went on, half hysterical at this point. "I know I owe you, okay? But I c-can't--" she choked out, beginning to cry. She stumbled again, setting her even more on edge. Without another word, she turned and fled. --behind the post-- she is really, really freaked out she's not ready for a relationship, and "owing" Whisky scares her even more do want to keep this thread any more, appy?
