Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

”And I trust you,” she replied. Suddenly, he felt the mood shift, and she turned her face away from him, barely giving him a fleeting glimpse of a face so filled with longing that it was almost tangible. He felt her slide past him, and her scent filled the air. They both knew what she offered, though this time, it was unspoken. However, this was not like before, what she had offered up as a game, as a shiny prize for him to claim for both of their own amusement. This was the beginning. The beginning of the end perhaps. The beginning of the end to his sorrows, to his heartbreak, to his apathy…but the memories would never leave. That much he promised himself. Maybe it was greedy, maybe it was selfish, but he would cling stubbornly to that last piece of Song forever.
Oser felt the rough silk of her tail swish past his legs, and he sighed, deeply, unsure but not knowing what else there was for him to do but move on. She loved him—what more could he ask for? Was it fair for him to ask that he loved her in return right now? After all, some said that mutual love was once-in-a-lifetime. Oser thought back, remembering the alliance that he and zoet had made work. They had still cared for each other; at least he had for her, and it hadn’t been all that bad. And anyway, he thought wryly, he still could have a shot at love with Raine. What Song had done to him couldn’t exactly be considered mutual love now, could it?
Enough. Enough thought. He’d make himself crazy, agonizing like this. Just do it.
Her patronus circled them, two creatures under a starry night sky. It prowled on light feet, pacing, pacing, pacing…but as he pulled away from Raine, he couldn’t help but notice that the great bear had not joined them.
