I'm like a bird, I'll only fly away...
[/pre] Ava opened her eyes and awoke to the sound of birdsong and the brush of snowflakes against her thick winter pelt. It struck her strange that the birds could go on singing as if it were the first day of spring when a harsh winter lay ahead of them. Yet there they were, without a care in the world. If only she felt the same...
Shaking the snow off of her painted coat, she lifted a dainty hoof and began to move forward, freezing when she heard the slightest muffled sound behind her. A rabbit scampered past, and she relaxed visibly. As long as it wasn't another horse...
This time of year made her more paranoid than usual. Ever since Whisky had mysteriously rescued and healed her and she had fled, she had been moving steadily southward. He had been kind enough, but she was uncomfortable owing him...and that morning when she had come into heat, she had panicked. She didn't want to be around anybody at this time of year. No she did not.
Nervously, she started forward again, blinking every once and a while to bat the sticky flakes from her long dark lashes. Passing a pond nearly frozen over, looking like a shattered mirror, she caught a glimpse of her strange reflection. Her white patches blended in with the snowy scenery, while the deep brown stood out, seemingly unsupported. She was as good as a strange phantom if only parts of her were there. How true it was, she thought briefly. For she was only half here...

Scathashoun had separated from the war group for a moment, deciding to go south to recruit even more followers. It wasn't necessarily that they needed more- it was that he needed out for a moment. He had to breathe- and he couldn't breathe there, body after body pressing against him as they moved, clustering together in war. He had made excuses to get away- and here was the best one. Ramaskith practically died of joy every time he heard of more warriors; Scathashoun need a breather- and more mares, goshdarnit, what with with Rama's women-can't-fight thing? It was freaking winter! If anything he should want more mares! Keep up the morale. Yeah. That's why they should have more mares.
He sighed as the snow settled around him in thick, white clumps. Not quite small enough to be flakes, he decided. He liked the winter- he didn't get all that cold, and he adored the contrast. Continuing his slow, relaxed walk, he soon stumbled across the scent of a mare in heat.
Hmm. Morale. Yeah... Rama, sorry to say, but you're getting more mares than stallions when I'm out. He smirked to himself, Them stags- just too jealous of my prowess.
He kept a slight spring to his step, his unusual joy and humor welcomed at the moment. He debated for a moment, pausing before he went to the horse. Either intimidate her into joining- pretty fun route, if he must say- or coax her into it. Less fun, but more opportunities for "raising his morale".
Unless she was just batshit crazy.
Either way, he decided to go with intimidation. He nodded to himself contentedly, stepping out to the mare's view.
"Well, now, what do we have here...?" he pondered out loud, her stance skitterish and obviously weak. Damn. Not a good fighter- but a good toy, most certainly.
"Let's see... A pretty little thing," he started, walking ever closer to her, "Lost in her own little world and scared of her own shadow. THat's not all to smart of you, dear, what with the war and all."

And though my love is rare, and though my love is true... [/pre] "Let's see... A pretty little thing,"
The voice came out of nowhere, and she whipped around, clamping her tail to her body and pinning her ears. A handsome dark stag, powerfully built, was approaching her as he spoke. "Lost in her own little world and scared of her own shadow. That's not all too smart of you, dear, what with the war and all." She opened her mouth to reply, prepared to deliver a shaky retort, when his words caught up to her thoughts. Unable to conceal her disbelief, shock replaced fear as she blurted, "War? What do you mean by...war?"
The war was over, anyone knew that. Especially Ava. Yet this stranger spoke of it in such familiar terms...perhaps she was dreaming? Now that she thought of it, there was a rather dreamlike quality in the air. The slowly falling snow, blanketing sound, obscuring sight, the talk of war, this handsome stranger...but of course, if it was a dream, Rhyn would be here. She shook her head, shrinking back a bit as she realized that this was most definitely reality. The stranger must be mistaken. There was no war. Ava knew there wasn't. There couldn't be. She was growing angry now; how dare he lie to her? How dare he speak so lightly of a war that thousands had died in?
She stomped a slender leg defiantly, pinning her ears even flatter against her skull. "There is no war, stranger. You are mistaken," she hissed, hating the flicker of amusement in his eyes. "Do not speak so lightly of what isn't true."
--behind the post-- so, I was gonna have her be all like "whaa..?" but I went and looked at her bio and realized that talking about the war is one of the things she hates so I had to make her angry funnily enough, it also says she's not easily pushed around, but I guess that only applies to mares xD ...Hey I'm just scared that we may fall through

"Oh, so the little one doesn't know of this war, does she?" he mocked, stepping closer to her as he spoke. "Of course there can't be war. It's winter; it's been agreed that no conflict shall occur- but why the hell would a murderous brute follow such an illogical rule? It's called the element of surprise, love." He paused a moment, laughing and shaking his head. "You really believe that there is no war? Why do you think everyone is fleeing to the North and South? Oh, right- they're just there for a change of scenery. Bah!"
"You know what you remind me of, my oblivious one?" he asked, tone light and teasing as he was close enough to touch her, "You remind me of a little foal, fed comforting lies in an attempt to keep it safe. You feel safe here, don't you, love?" he asked, mocking her. He began to circle her, overpowering her small body and hoping to push her to fear him even more.
"Guess what, my dear?
"You aren't."

Now listen to me baby, Before I love and leave ya... Whisky trudged forward. Vicious, bitter thoughts of the war filled his mind. He had no idea how he was able to slip away, but he did, Rama had not cared, yet, Whisky didn't even remember the excuse he had used. Flakes clung to his pelt and hair. He shook his body, dislodging most of them. He dragged his hooves, thoughts of Ava mixing with thoughts of war. He missed her, dearly. Why had she fled? What had he done? He felt as if it was his fault, and he kicked at the snow angrily. He had been falling for her, and he couldn't stop thinking about her. Whisky suddenly lifted his head as he heard a voice all too familiar. That voice.
'Guess what, my dear? You aren't.' Aren't what? The smell of a mare in heat reached his nose. Then another scent, that equine. The one that obscured his thoughts all day, every day. Ava. Should he approach? Whisky snorted, and flicked his tail, coming through the trees, 10 feet away from Scath and Ava. Whisky had a temptation to pin his ears at Scath, yet he just narrowed his eyes. He was too close to her. He snorted again, louder, so they both heard. The sight of Ava filled him with joy and adrenaline. Did she hate him? Whisky hoped not. Whisky took a hesitant step forward. He wanted to slam Scath away from her, force his sharp hooves through his spine. He did not deserve her, did not deserve anyone, anything, not to walk this land. Whisky snorted, whisking his tail against his sides agitatedly. If he tried to do anything to her, he would not know what happened, Whisky would not allow him to. Ava's scent filled his nostrils, and he longed to go to her, comfort her, protect her. Anger coursed through his veins, and he saw it in her eyes. His knees buckled. So she was mad at him? Tears prickled at the back of his eyes and he forced them away, using all his strength to stay upright. He sunk over into a tree, and his breath quickened. He realized he looked weak, and he forced himself up steadying his breath, and watching Scath with narrowed eyes. He would not do anything to her. Nothing.

You're lovely but it's not for sure... [/pre] His were venomous words, hateful, hateful, how dare he talk about the war, how dare he mock her, how dare he?! How dare he...touch her?
His large black body loomed closer over her delicate form, and she stared up at him through defiant eyes, too enraged to back away. He would pay, he would...oh. The long hairs of his coal black hide brushed her, electricity shooting her body. No, this wasn't happening; she was angry at him, angry...! Yet she couldn't resist nature. After all, he was a stag, and this was winter. Try as she might, her body had other plans. With each circle around her, her boiling anger began to dissolve. Ava was softening, melting, his powerful presence burning her body. She gave a halfhearted attempt at a bite, barely grazing his hide with her teeth.
"Safe?" she murmured, eyeing him. "Oh, I feel quite far from it at the moment. And yet," she paused to shift her weight, moving her hindquarters just out of his reach, "...and yet, I don't seem to mind."
She looked up at him through her lashes coyly, awaiting his response. It had been so long...
A sudden noise in the brush whipped her back to her senses and she backed a few hasty steps. Ohnonononono, this was why she'd needed to stay away from stags during the winter, one touch of a muzzle, one brush of a hide and she could be trapped in situation like the present one. The newcomer stepped closer, and she felt her stomach swoop as she recognized him: it was Whisky.
--behind the post-- so yeah. shady + tiredness = weirdness ava's going to flip at her new predicament xD she's like, "Why are you following meee??!" ...That I won't ever change

He felt her stiff, bristling, angry body soften, melt against his as he moved. He let a slow, dangerous smile creep up his face, chuckling softly at her barely-there bite. "Mmmm, like it rough, do you?" he asked teasingly, snapping out at her face with just enough force to grasp her skin- but not enough to break it. He pressed against her body... so soft, so warm... nosing gently at her shoulder, letting his lips and maw nuzzle her down her spine, tickling at the base of her tail and inhaling deeply. Oh, thank god for mares, and thank God for wintertime.
"Safe? Oh, I feel quite far from it at the moment. And yet," she murmured, shifting away so that he could no longer reach her hindquarters- yet it seemed not to be a move of fear, but one of playful evasiveness. He snorted, stepping closer to her and running his lips up and down her muscular neck, her delicate face. Scathashoun felt himself reacting to her, unable to stop it- oh good LORD did she knew what she was doing!?
"...and yet, I don't seem to mind." Scathashoun let out a soft groan as she looked coyly up at him, hastily making his way to her rear end. Her scent surrounded him, heavy, intoxicating... He began to rise onto his rear legs, and suddenly felt her back up a few steps into him. "No need to be so anxious, love," he mocked, beginning to set his forelegs down on her back. "'I'm getting the-" He suddenly cursed internally as Whisky stepped out of the trees. Letting out a snort of contemptment- and, well, discomfort- he got off of hte mare before anything even truly began.
"Damn it, Whisky!" he exclaimed, "Must you always be there at the most inopportune moment?"

I knew when we collided, You're the one I have decided who's one of my kind Whisky froze. What the hell was Ava doing? Scath ran how maw along her spine, before nosing her tail. Whisky pinned his ears, snorting. He better not go there. Things moved to fast. Scath positioned himself behind her, raising onto his hind legs she backed into him. Whisky's scream choked in his throat, his mouth staying ever so silent. He placed his forelegs upon her, and Whisky pinned his ears flat against his cranium, rearing up and tossing his head, his eyes slits. Any further and Whisky could not hold back.
'Damn it, Whisky!' Scath exclaimed, 'Must you always be there at the most inopportune moment?' He slipped off Ava, and Whisky snorted, watching Scath. He tossed his head, stepping forward, stopping out of his striking distance, "I guess so," Whisky said bitterly, his voice hard, cold, and dripping with sarcasm. His eyes blazing red in anger. Whisky's body was tense, stiff, how he hated Scath so so much. His heart thundered against his ribs, pounding, sounding like a drum in his ears, fresh adrenaline running through his veins. How dare he? How dare he even try? How dare he even touch her?! Whisky whisked his tail, then glanced at Ava. How would she respond? Is this why she fled? She secretly liked Scath? Or... what? His gaze faltered as his eyes met her, dissolving back to gold, turning, shifting, to a color he had yet to have. Emerald. Bright, and green. He swung his head back to look at Scath, his eyes blazing red once more, even more anger coursing through him. He should not be here. Scath did not deserve Ava.

And baby all I need for you to know is...
[/pre] No. He didn't know him. He couldn't know him. And yet, here he was greeting him by name. Not exactly in a friendly tone, but by name nonetheless.
Her body tensed as the stag slid from her back and Whisky approached. No, no, there were too many stags, too many, too many--why had she been so stupid, why had she let this black one so close? She realized that she didn't even know his name. It was better that way. And Whisky, what was he doing here? She closed her eyes briefly terrified at the thought of him having followed her. How long had he been trailing her?
She twitched her ears anxiously, glancing around for a way out, a way to escape. But the trees and the brush were thick, and the only way she saw lay just beyond the big black stag before her. The dangerous one. No, this was not good.
She coughed slightly, looking nervously from Whisky to the black stag, a loud noise in the awkward silence. Please don't let them fight, please just let her go...
The two stags eyed each other, Whisky obviously angry. Angry? Part of her couldn't help but wonder why, couldn't help but wonder if he was jealous...However, she shoved the thoughts from her mind, seizing the moment of distraction as an opportunity. She bolted, attempting to slip past the powerful stag to her freedom. He smoothly sidestepped, blocking her path. She heard his rumbling chuckle and the mocking words, "Not so fast, love. We have business to attend to here, don't you remember?"
"We have nothing of the...sort" she began angrily, her voice a whisper as she ended, as he brushed her side ever so slightly with his own. "Let me go." But the words were halfhearted, weak. How appropriate for a mare with only half a heart in her painted chest.

There's no much nonsense, It's on my conscience... Whisky could feel Ava tense up. She didn't want him here. She took a step back, dropping his head slightly. Weights dragged his feet, tears prickling at the back of his mind. He pushed them away, and Ava suddenly bolted, trying to escape. Scath easily side-stepped and blocked her. Whisky snorted, and anger coursed through him again, and he stepped forward again. 'Not so fast, love. We have business to attend to here, don't you remember?' Scath said, an evil grin spreading across his maw. Ava cringed, 'We have nothing of the...sort,' she said, angry at first, yet her voice turning to a whisper as she finished. 'Let me go.' she said, halfheartedly. Whisky then knew. She didn't want this, winter affected everyone, and he noticed how he brushed against her and she melted. Whisky pinned his ears, and whinnied. His voice was bitter, yet twinged with the slightest of jealousy, "Scath. Let her go" Whisky narrowed his eyes, and Scath didn't move. Whisky snaked his head out, threatening to bite him, and only grazing as a warning. Scath's eyes glinted. Whisky huffed and suddenly slammed into Scath, making him step and falter to the side, and accidentally brushed up against Ava. Whisky snorted, his audits pinned to his cranium. He turned, looking at Ava, get Scath still in his line of vision. "Ava. You don't want this, do you?" His voice was soft, almost a whisper. Whisky didn't know what to say. The sight of Ava brought back memories from the cave. The storm. And then when she had run away, run away from him. He wanted to go to her, comfort her, protect her... protect her from Scath. Whisky reached his soft maw and touched it to her cheek lightly, like he had so many times in the cave. He brushed the forelock out of her beautiful milk-chocolate eyes, and smiled at her slightly, before softly nuzzling her neck with soft, light, touches, hoping she would not flip out on him.
