aleta
The mare stood with her head flung back, legs splayed wide, poised at the edge of the waterfall. Spring sun was melting the ice off of the mountains, and the current was stronger than usual as it flowed down the western cliffs. Aleta loved the added danger even more, relishing the rush she was getting from simply standing here. Of course, she hadn't ventured into the water yet--she had to find a way to get in without being swept away, for right now, dying wasn't exactly part of her plans. No, she didn't want to die. She just wanted to come close.
The tiger dun edged even further out on the needle of rock that stretched forward to where the water was cascading down the side of the cliff. Sunlight struck her coat, making a sheen on the black and highlighting the gold. The wind played with her long, dark, coarse mane, tossing it back messily over her neck as she inched forward. She wanted to look over the edge. Carefully, she placed one hoof in front of another, taking one step at a time...and then she was there. Before she looked down, she closed her eyes. She was going to savor the moment before she opened them and looked down. There surely had to be a deep chasm opening beneath her hooves. The water roared in her ears and she smiled, opening her eyes. She looked down, waiting for her stomach to give that familiar swoop of...disappointment? Aleta stared down in dismay, disgusted at the actual height of the fall. Slightly below her lay a shallow pool, within what, to her, was a reasonably small jumping distance. Briefly she wondered if she could, but the pool lay off to the side, and it was not deep enough to guarantee a successful landing. A ways down, she could see that the falls continued to a deep chasm, but it was so narrow and closed off that it was practically underground. She sighed deeply and made her way off of the rocky point. How anticlimatic. Her eyes searched the surroundings, looking for a better place. A slight trail leading up off to her right caught her eye. Maybe this would yield a better result?
She started towards it, already smiling again in anticipation, when she sensed the presence of another. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a shadowy figure. Pausing, she turned towards the stranger. It was rare that equines wanted to come up here. Most that she knew preferred to keep their hooves planted firmly on the ground. Perhaps she had stumbled upon a fellow adventurer? "Hello!" she called brightly, determined to find out.
