The next thing she knew she was falling…and for a moment, it was beautiful. She was airborne, suspended, light as a feather yet heavy as a boulder. True fear clouded her eyes for a moment, then the irrepressible joyous sensation of flying overcame the fear, even in the knowledge that death awaited her when she hit the ground and that death surely had awaited her ever since she had met the mysterious stranger with the amber-eyed shadowcat. A scream escaped Aleta’s charcoal lips, but it too was soon lifted up and away from her as the air rushed by, kissing her sun-gold pelt for one last time. She plummeted like a miniature dying sun, growing still in the air just before she hit the rocky side of the cliff, slamming into the earth. The mare’s body tumbled down the rest of the slope, dark hair flying, tail streaming along the ground after her…
Later that evening, a lithe brown snake happened upon the body and curled up on the warm golden hide, battered and dusty, yet still smooth. The mare’s eyes, wide open, did not blink but looked on, still as if in faint surprise at her final visitor. And so Aleta fell from the sky, another nameless victim of the Eastern King. [/size]
