text "speech" thoughts "other characters' speech"
Lia seemed to be in agreement with him, but he couldn't hear anything any longer. With each crackle of lightning, with each boom of thunder, he shook. His legs locked up and so did his mind, he couldn't move, he couldn't think. His heart pounded in his chest, the rhythm slowly rising. Lightning. Thunder. Flashes of white, the ground shaking just a tad. Flashes of the past whirred by. Brief moments taking shelter in that cave in the West, with Raine. He shivered, thinking about Song and if she had recovered from all that had happened. If Oser had made sure she recovered. He thought about that time in the South, when a storm had lit that forest on fire... And the flashes of way before, like always. Sleeping in the forest, hearing the other animals run. Waking up in fear and heat, realizing what had happened and trying to get away. But he wasn't fast enough. Never fast enough, to escape the fire. To escape Ember. He had ran then, and she had not followed physically, but she was always there with him; he could never get away. Was he destined to be forever running away from everything? To just barely get by, just barely stay out of the grasp of death? It was as it seemed. And he had no hope of breaking free of the cycle. He wold forever be stuck, running from danger, running from fear, running from life, again and again; never stopping. There was no hope for him.
Lightning. Thunder. Crash, bang. The ground shook so hard he was thrown off balance. His legs unlocked, moving to catch himself and only barely succeeding. He glanced at Lia, realizing that she had been trying to say something. More lightning. More thunder. Crash, bang. His eyes widened in fear as the lightning his the sky, igniting the trees ahead of them. He whinnied, loosing his mind. He couldn't take this anymore. He reared, panic coating his every move. His mind chanted a cacophony of words; fire, pain, lightning, fear. It whirled around him and he just wanted free. He watched as the fire devoured everything in it's path, the yellowed flames licking up the resistant wet wood, sparks flying and crackling, like the screams of those it had eaten in the past. He felt something touch him and he jumped, his body shaking and eyes wide. And then he just froze, realizing it was Lia and not wanting to hurt her. He just froze, like a statue, the illuminated flames painting pictures against his pale skin. She pushed against him, but he couldn't move. He couldn't do anything. He was so lost, his mind only focused on the fear of the flames and the fear of the pain that came from them. There was nothing else, only fear. Just fear, and it was eating at him, just as the flames would do. Eating him alive.Fire. Pain. Fear. His patronus seemed to echo his thoughts, swimming through the air frantically. Must flee! Must get away from the fire. From the pain. From the fear. Fleeee! A switch went off in his head and he turned, running fast. All he ever did was run. He ate up the ground, the sounds of the fire like trumpets behind him. So loud, so close, so evil. He wasn't aware of anything but the ground in front of him and the fire behind him, and only the will to escape. His legs surged impossibly beneath him, finding strength where there was none. He kept running, and running, always running, always fleeing, always in fear. He hit something solid, his momentum carrying him further, almost leaping over the obstacle. He whickered, locking his legs to keep from falling, twisting to find what he had collided with. Lia was on the ground, quickly getting to her feet. Oh no. Had he hurt her? He began to shake again, uncontrollably. Her mouth was open, saying something, but he heard nothing. She pulled at him, but he felt nothing. The fire roared, moving closer still, but he was unaware of it all. He let his head drop and his eyes close, wondering what good could possibly come from all of this torture.
Lia continued to push at him, working towards some goal he was not aware of. His feet pushed against the snow as she moved him, pushing, trying to make him move. All life had drained from him in an instant. She seemed to be satisfied with where he was, dashing away for a moment. He collapsed against the ground, the rocks digging into his sides and making an unusually large clatter compared to the roar of the fire outside. He could hear the splashing of water, also very loud to his ears. Sounds flickered, and he couldn't focus on one thing at a time, sounds faded and then returned, and he was confused. He jumped, suddenly finding himself freezing and wet, his mind clearing as he began to shake again. The sounds of the fire not so far away. Laelius was suddenly there, beside him, and he was shaking too hard to even flinch away. Was she angry with him, for hurting her? Was she going to punish him? What was going to happen? He shifted against the rocks, the clatter sounding at a normal volume this time. Was the fire going to remain a small distance away, not hurting them as it hurt the forest? Were they just going to stay here and hope for the best?
The other patronus, the owl, appeared, curling up against the mare. Keanu pulled his head against his chest, his heart beat loud in his ears and still moving at a frantic rate. It was a miracle he hadn't suffered from a heart attack yet, with all of the stress he had been thrown into with these situations. He felt Lia's face against his shoulder and the skin twitched, his body shifting again as the anxiety made him restless and so tired at the same time."Shh, Keanu, it's be over soon. It's okay, shhh..." She pressed her muzzle to his neck and he tensed, waiting to feel the teeth sink into his skin, despite her words. He had run into her in a state of panic, shouldn't she be angry with him? But she didn't bite him. She just rubbed her maw against his neck. The action made him slightly sleepy, though his body was still rigid with fear from the still present flames. His body was cool to the touch, short hairs damp with sweat and water, not much longer or thicker than they would be in the summer. She shifted closer to him, almost..massaging his neck and trailing her nose against his back. In an attempt to...calm him? Why would she care to do that? He had hurt her, had collided with her and caused her to fall over. It made no sense. Though it was working, whatever she was doing. He let his head fall to the ground slowly, nickering softly, almost inaudibly, placing his neck across the mare's outstretched forelegs, nose against the ground with a sigh. The action caused his barrel to roll, his spine brushing against her stomach as he turned, the two framed against each other. He hadn't realized they were that close, her winter coat tickling against his back. His stomach rose and fell with each rapid breath he took. He started to move away, but she continued to run her maw across his skin. His eyes drooped and he settled more firmly against the ground, and her. His breathing began to even out, the crackling of the fire no longer such a roar, but more of background noise. It was weird to think that the sounds that frightened him so bad actually lulled him to sleep, but they did. That and the soft cooing of his axolotl patronus and the soft touches from this mare he barely knew. He began to open his mouth, to say thank you, but all that came out was a soft sigh as his body relaxed, returning to what could be considered a 'normal' state, and he drifted into unconsciousness. His body settled in closer to hers, craving the warmth the well insulated pelt provided, as he drifted to sleep. He only hoped he would not have nightmares.

Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Keanu's heart beat finally started to recede. She continued her slow massaging pattern. Running her maw along his neck and down his back. His body was becoming less and less tense. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. His body was becoming less and less tense, and his head finally dropped down, resting across her forelegs. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. His eyelids began to droop, and she noticed how he ever so slightly shifted away from her. She didn't stop though, she kept massaging his creamy pelt. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. He as starting to fall asleep, and he shifted closer to her, and she smiled, nuzzling his neck softly. Her body was wrapped around his, and his slow breathing calmed her. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. The cackling of the fire grew dimmer as her own eyelids started to droop. Keanu's body relaxed completely, and he opened his lips and sighed. He started drifting off in a sleep, and he curled in closer to her, pressed directly up against her. Lia smiled and continued her slow massaging touches, and the owl hooted feebly, falling asleep with the tension in the air gone.
Keanu's breathing remained calm, da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. His heart beat soothing in her ears. Her eyelids drooped, and the heat of the fire was not too hot, making the rocky shelter a nice warm temperature. Her maw paused against his withers, and her head slowly sunk down to rest across them, both of their breathing calm, soothing, the roaring of the fire to longer roaring, and more like white noise. Her thoughts started to drift off...
The small breeze licked at Laelius's face, and she smiled. Bird songs reached her ears, and the hum of bees buzzed by. A rowdy foal tromped by, chasing after squirrels and tromping of flowers. A laugh bubbled from Lia's lips, and she glanced over, her bright green eyes finding Keanu's deep blue ones. She smiled, walking over to him and touching her maw to his. Sounds of the foal's laughter floated to her ears, and she bolted over to them, smiling and bouncing on long, spindly legs. Lia nosed the small foal, and it leaned against them, smiling, her eyes shifting from a deep aqua to a bright shining silver. Lia wrapped her neck around the foal's small framed, pulling her toward's them. Lia smiled and leaned against Keanu, his soft pelt cool to the touch. A warm breeze tousled her mane and tail, and the foal bounded of again, squealing and laughing. This is all Lia ever wanted, someone that cared about her. Lia looked into Keanu's eyes, and her heart stopped with a painful shriek that reached her ears, Lia swung her cranium around, her foal shrieking as Ramaskith himself grabbing her leg. Lia's own scream was chocked back, her throat constricting, her eyes shifting to a blazing red. She tried to bound forward, yet she was stuck, she couldn't move, it was as if her hooves were glued to the ground. Lia cried out in anger, Rama cackling. "Keanu! Our baby! Keanu! Help her! [/b]" She shrieked, trying to free herself. [/i]'Lia, I-I can't, I'm stuck..!' He said, hanging his head in shame. "NO! Let me help her! Keanu! Please! No!" She cried, tears pouring from her eyes. Ramaskith's eyes glinted, and he grabbed the foal's tail and dragged her closer, taunting, cackling. Lia struggled harder as the foal called out in pain. Rama snapped at her, teeth sinking into her soft flesh. Lia screamed in fury, and Keanu stood and watched, frozen. "Keanu! P-p-pleasre! I can't take this!" Keanu merely shifted, and Lia struggled, watching as Rama striked her with his foreleg, the crack of ribs echoing in her ears. Lia sobbed harder, struggling, struggling, but unable to help. Rama smiled, looking up at Lia. He turned and pounded the foal's spine, and the foal fell lip, whimpering, it's voice fading. Rama reared up, hooves slashing, and he landed down upon her skull, blood spattering him. Lia broke down, sobs heaving her body as she stood there, unable to turn away. Rama wasn't done. He stepped towards Lia, his red eyes glinting, smiling. His touched his rough maw to her neck. 'Shhhh, it's okay. I'll take care of you...' He said, cooing, and Lia pulled her neck back, wanting to strike him. Rama turned and swiftly kicked Keanu in the chest, causing Lia to break down again. "N-No. Take me. Take me!" She sobbed, and Rama turned and smiled, that's exactly what he wanted. He nosed Lia's withers, and Lia turned her head away, not wanting to look at him. Rama cackled and spun, striking Keanu's cranium, and he fell limp to. Lia sobbed, her body heaving. "N-n-no..." She cried, and Ram nosed her tail, 'Come on, darling, you'll see what a real man is like.' He said, smiling. Lia sobbed, and he pushed her forward, she stumbled, almost falling. Rama snorted, prancing forward, or, what he thought was prancing. Lia was not amused, and she turned away, tempted to bolt, flee. Rama grasped her tail, and Lia kicked his jaw. He roared in fury and she reared up, wanting to run away from her. Rama rammed into her, nocking her to the ground. Lia cowered in fear as he circled her. He paused at her rear, and Lia sobbed, almost collapsing. He reared up, placing his forelegs down upon her, mounting her....Lia awoke, coughing, ash filling her lungs, tears plastered upon her face, and still gushing out of her purple eyes. Her body shook, it had seemed so real... so real. The image of Rama still plastered in her mind, him striking the foal, striking Keanu, then... Lia gulped, turning her head away, trying to clear her thoughts, she slowly calmed herself with Keanu's slow breathing, he was still slumbering, and Lia wiped the tears off of her face on her forelegs before resting her head over Keanu's silky pelt again, the dream still radiating through her mind. text "speech" thoughts "other characters' speech"
Sleep claimed him quickly, first just a dark abyss. Keanu was happy with this, no dreams, no night mares. No nothing, just darkness. Then color started to appear, slow at first, but then he could see everything clearly. He was laying in the middle of a dead field, in a land far away from where he was now. The wind was soft against his pelt, the fuzzy hairs of a young colt still present. The ground was rough against his skin, but he was used to it. His hair stood up along his neck, not quite long enough to fall along either side, but was very close. His skin was unmarked, and he tensed, knowing that surely Ember was going to be present, and what seemed like a good dream would rapidly turn into a bad one. But the scene swam by, just a small fraction of goodness in the batch of bad. He supposed Ember wasn't all that bad, in the face of a small foal who didn't know anything different. He wasn't treated badly, just taught to do bad things. She may have been evil, but she was the only mother he had ever known, even if he constantly denied it. He had no memories of who his real mother was, or his father. Very few of the brother he had, and all of those were bad. The dream skipped along, fast forwarding through all of the bad stuff. Now he was in another field, with grass tickling his pink skin and nose. The wind was still present, pulling gently at a slightly longer mane and tail and he was content. A looming black figure appears, scolding him half heartedly for sleeping in the middle of the day. Keanu remembered this, it was after he had escaped from Ember, after the fire, after all of that. And he had happened to find his grandfather; his father's father. He had taken him in, taught him about the better things in life. He had learned so much when he was younger, so much that was bad, and so much that contradicted the previous learnings, he didn't know where to stand. But he knew that what Ember had taught him was wrong, completely wrong, no matter how his body continued to react in situations. Wind had taught him to be himself, or as much of himself as he could, without the influence of Ember. Sometimes Keanu wondered if that short time was for nothing, because it seemed as if he hadn't changed all that much.
The memories passed by, and he was glad for the break from night mares, how ever small that break might be. Though, as if sensing that train of thought, Ember appeared in his mind. He shuddered, afraid of what she might say. Even though it was the same thing every time, it still angered him; frightened him. She smiled at him, saying nothing, and it unnerved him. "Hello, Keanu," she said, and he was glad that she didn't address him as 'son,' as she seemed so fond of doing. He didn't speak, he was tired of fighting with her. He just wanted her to go away. She seemed to realize this. "Oh, Keanu, babyy," she cooed, moving towards him. He flinched and she laughed, enjoying this torture she Put him through. "I will never go away."
She disappeared, images flickering in his head. She was right, she would never disappear. She seemed to show up no matter the situation he was in. Whether it be bad, or neutral, she was always here, always tearing at him, trying to make him do as she taught him to. As he kept doing by accident. It seemed everywhere he went, he hurt someone. Usually not on purpose, but someone always got hurt, nonetheless. He couldn't help but wonder how his life would have been if Ember hadn't been there that day, hadn't been there to steal him. Would he and Nahele be as brothers should be? Or was the hate Nahele felt towards him predestined? And his mother? Nahele claimed that Keanu's kidnapping had been the first of many blows that lead to her downfall, thus blaming him for everything. Would everything had been fine if nothing had happened? And who would he be? Just another stallion to roam the lands? Maybe that would have been better, to be some mindless brute instead of a brute trapped inside, breaking free when the opportunity struck. Maybe it would be easier to just succumb to it all, become this mindless killer that Ember wanted him to be, instead of fighting it. What would happen then? He couldn't even think of it, of what he would be. Could've been; almost was. No, he could never harm others like that, it was bad enough with the small things he happened to do on occasion. He just didn't fit in anywhere.
And what about Lia? She had seemed almost.. friendly, even after all that had happened. She had jumped into the river to save him, someone she had never seen before in her life. Why had she done that? It didn't make any sense in his mind. Why save the strange, scarred creature; a stranger on top of that. And she had risked her life, jumping into that river after him, saving him. And then she had followed him, while running from the bear, when she could have just as easily taken her own path. Did she feel..like she had to make sure he was okay..because he so obviously seemed like such a screw up as it was. And then the fire...why had she tried to help him? Try to calm him? He was grateful for it all, of course, but it still didn't make sense in his mind. He hadn't done anything to deserve this help, quite the opposite actually. He had pushed her to the ground, and yet she still tried to help him. Why?
Keanu shifted, the rocks rolling under his body and pushing him closer to Laelius. He slowly opened his eyes, drowsy and blinking. He started to yawn, though it was interrupted b a cough. The air was strong with the smell of burnt wood, from the fire just hours before. He sneezed, lifting his head and looking around. There was still a crackling sound, where the fire had failed to go completely out. He shuddered, the sound making him antsy. Lia's head was laying across his back and he turned, yawning again. He couldn't but wonder, again, why she was sticking around. He turned, her head slipping off of his back as he rolled to the side, pulling his feet underneath him as he got to his feet. "Thank you," he said finally, "For.. Helping me. Last night, and before. You really didn't have to."

Keanu's eyelids fluttered, he was awake. He shifted, causing Lia's head to slip off of his back. Lia yawned, watching as he stood up, and she did so also, stretching her legs and neck. 'Thank you, for.. helping me. Last night, and before. You really didn't have to,' He said, looking at her. Lia smiled, tossing her forelock out of her gold eyes. "Keanu. It's all good, seriously. I wouldn't want to see you die, or even suffer. When you fell into the river, I wasn't going to let you drown, I couldn't do that." She said, flicking her tail.
Lia touched her maw to his neck softly before stepping outside. Brush was still ignited, but for the most part, the raging fire was gone, and ash fell from the sky. Lia coughed, her lungs full of smoke. Lia glanced around, the fire must not of lasted long, as most the trees were still standing. Charred remnants of bark and brush scattered the snowy ground, and Lia stepped forward, sniffing curiously. Her owl soared out, fading in the strained sunlight. It hooted, landing upon a branch, stretching its wings, even though it really didn't need to.
The sky was opposite from dark, it was white. Too white. Lia narrowed her eyes, glancing at the clouds the surrounded them This wasn't happening. This couldn't be happening. A like that, a huge amount of snow started to fall, the win picking up. "Keanu, we need to go back in there. I think another storm is coming, and a bad one at that." Lia said, backing up. The wind started to howl, and snow was blown into her eyes and stinging her thick pelt. She shifted closer to Keanu, though the blinding white was devouring him. Lia's breath quickened in fear. "Keanu? We really should get inside!" She said, fear radiating through her voice. Her eyes shifted back to purple, the color they seemed to be stuck on recently, and she could barely make out Keanu, let alone her own nose. She could see the brown patch over his blue eye, and she stumbled over to him, trying not to trip over debris. The wind played with her, pushing and pulling her, coming dangerously close to knocking her over. "Kean- Need- Elter!" Her words barely audible over the screaming wind. She stumbled into Keanu' her heart pounding. The white was surrounding her, surrounding Keanu, surrounding everything. Where was the shelter? Her twisted her neck, straining her eyes to see. She had barely stepped out. A screech of an owl faintly met her ears, and she tried to tell where it came from, but the white had consumed everything. She pressed herself against Keanu, shivering, knowing it must be worse for him, with the scars wrapping up his legs and his thin pelt and short winter coat. She pressed herself to him, wrapping her neck across his withers. They needed to find the shelter if they didn't want to freeze.
Lia felt her muscles start to slow, locking down against the cold, and she tossed her head, pacing in place, anything to keep the blood flowing. "Keanu, we really need to find the shelter!" she screamed, even with him next to her. She turned, keeping part of her touching him as to not lose him. Her maw bumped something sharp, and she lowered her head, sensing the open space. There. It was there. Yet she suddenly realized she could not feel Keanu anymore. Her head shot up in fright, ramming against the sharp rock, making her stumble to the side in pain. Where was Keanu? She needed to find Keanu! She couldn't lose him! Her heart thundered against her ribs, and she stepped forward, screaming out, "Keanu? KEANU! Keanu, where are you?! Can you hear me?!" It was no use, she could't even hear her own voice in the wind. Sobs heaved her body. She couldn't let him suffer. She scrambled forward, running her maw along everything, yet she couldn't find that silky smooth pelt. She collapsed to the ground, her body shaking, freezing, heaving.
Lia pulled herself up, knowing if she just laid there she would die. For no doubt. She stood on what felt like four spindly icicles that could break or snap any second. She leaned against what she thought was a tree, only to fall against the hard ground, knocking the wind out of her. She struggled to stand up, and hit something. Something soft. Something silky. Lia's heart beat faster, as she lay on the ground and slowly scooted over to the soft form. She pressed her maw against it, soft, fleshy, Keanu. She had found him! She ran her maw along him, she could feel his soft breathing. Was he okay? Did he pass out? "K-Keanu?" Lia croaked, hoping he was okay. She pulled on his mane, trying to get him to stand up. They could not stay out here any longer. The first signs of hypothermia starting to show through, her movements slow and labored, mis-functioning. She pulled against Keanu, pleading for him to get up, to be okay. Tears poured upon her face, only to freeze. She pulled and pulled before he slowly shifted, trying to stand. Lia scrambled, placing his head on her withers and helping him. "Keanu. We need to find shelter." She said, trying to remain calm.
Lia's movements were as slow as Keanu's and she wasn't sure where the shelter was. For all she knew they could be heading the wrong direction. She ran her maw along things, trying to remember things she had touched when she tried this before. It seemed like forever, but she bumped into the rocky surface, and scrambled inside. She collapsed upon the ground, curled around Keanu once more, repeating her motions as she had before, rubbing the warmth back into him, running her maw vigorously across his back and neck. She shivered, and her owl flew in, radiating heat through the shelter. At least it was blocked from the wind and snow. She curled up next to him as close as she could, and the owl lay across both of them, spreading warmth through them- or at least Lia. She cooed soft songs, trying to bring the warmth back into him, her eyelids drooping, yet she fought herself to stay awake, intent on helping Keanu survive.

"Keanu. It's all good, seriously. I wouldn't want to see you die, or even suffer. When you fell into the river, I wasn't going to let you drown, I couldn't do that."
She touched her muzzle to his neck before stepping out of the shelter. He turned, watching her go and pondering over what she had said. She hadn't wanted to see him drown? But she could have just walked away and not watched instead of risking her own life to save his. He didn't understand these equines, doing things to help others they barely knew. It didn't make any sense to him; he had never known such kindness, not truly. It was strange to think that someone would put themselves in danger to save someone else, without the expectations of something in return, or even knowning the other person. It went against everything he had ever known. He took a step forward, following Laelius out of the shelter and into the open. His hind leg pulled, the skin trying to heal over the gash from before. There was still the sounds of crackling, where the fire failed to blow out and sluggishly fought to regain strength. The smoke was thick and he coughed a few times, hearing Lia do the same. He shook his head, lowering his nose as he moved a few steps forward, his feet squishing in the slush that was gathered on the ground. The wind started to pick up, tugging at him mane and tail. It was not like the soft winds in his dreams, this was an angry wind, beating at him. He turned, lifting his head to look at the sky, trying to dechiper where this had come from so suddenly.
"Keanu, we need to go back in there. I think another storm is coming, and a bad one at that." He had to agree, looking up at the blindingly white sky. One moment he could see everything clearly, the next, it was white, and cold. He staggered back a step, whipping his head around, the snow pounding into him. He shivered, dipping his head and touching his nose to his chest, his pelt becoming icy and slick. He couldn't hear anything but the whir of the snow and wind. He locked his legs against the force of the air around him, trying to stay upright. The cold was immediately seeping down into his skin, chilling him to the bone and causing him to shiver uncontrollably. He just stood completely still, wishing it would stop, wishing it would go away. Just another thing to add to the list of bad things happening to him. Would nature ever stop? And this time he couldn't run. He had to sit here and endure it. He felt something bump against him and he twisted, eyes closed in the snow and reaching back to find out what it was. It was Lia. At least she wasn't lost in this mess, freezing to death alone. He could feel her neck over his back, and her body close to his, but the surrounding cold sucked out any heat that would have existed. He continued to shiver, his nose starting to run though the liquid was freezing against his skin.
He felt the pressure from where Lia had been leaning disappear, and he turned, seeing nothing in the whiteness. Where had she gone? He tried to nicker, to make any noise, but it was useless. The wind was too loud and his throat couldn't produce a sound loud enough to be heard. He took a few steps forward, searching, but he couldn't see anything. It would be better to just stand there and wait, rather than venture out and get himself hopelessly lost. His body shook and he pulled himself close, head against his chest and nose between his forelegs, hoping to keep himself warm but it was a useless hope. He was so cold, and there was nothing to keep himself warm. His legs shook and he couldn't stand any longer, falling to the ground and curling up in the snow; muscles spasming as they fought to retain any warmth in his body. Was he going to die now? In this storm he couldn't run from? He huddled in the snow, the cold substance piling up against him, turning him into a snow drift and making it harder to feel the world around him. It was so cold it was painful, each shake of his body like a sharp crack, his insides freezing up. How much longer could he last? An hour? Longer? He sqeezed his eyes shut, hoping it would be quicker.
His eyes were open and he was just staring at the whiteness gathered around him, his vision starting to swim with darkness. Was he going to fall unconscious? Would it be easier that way? He felt something press against him but he didn't move. His mind labored to come to an answer on who that could be. Ember, coming to take him away? Wind, protecting him? His brother, trying to kill him? His mother..his father? His eyes drooped, the white world tilting to the side. Who ever it was wasn't being very nice, pulling at him. He turned his head, moving to stand, to make it easier for them to take him. To relieve him of this pain. Pressure was suddenly there, under his head and assisting him, helping him stand. The pelt was not a color he knew. Not Ember, not Wind, not Nahele. Was it his mother then? His father? What had they looked like? The silvery golden color was unfamiliar. Who was this? He heard the faint sound of a voice, "Keanu. We need to find shelter." Then he remembered. It was Lia, helping him again. He wasn't being taken away, he wasn't gone. He tried his best to move with her, hoping she knew where to go.
She did. They found the shelter from before, the relief from the wind instantaneous. He fell to the ground again, his body shivering rapidly as it tried to warm itself, now that it was possible. Laelius curled up next to him, her patronus appearing and settling on top of them, and he could feel the warmth the creature provided. His heart skipped a few times and it was as if he could feel the ice freezing against the organ that gave him life, threatening to shut him down. His own patronus appeared, frantically searching for him. I couldn't seee! It was so whiteee! It cried, hurrying over and curling up next to Keanu's ribs. He continued to shake though, despite the warmth. His vision still swam and it felt as if the world was unstable. His stomach lurched, his throat contricting as he went into a coughing fit. It was a soft sound though, his vocal cords frozen over. All that came out were soundless puffs of air. He shook, huddling closer to Lia, wishing that he could just get warm. Anything but this cold. He leaned against her, the world falling away from him. He struggled to stay conscious, somehow thinking that yielding to this grasp couldn't possibly end well, but it pulled at him, dragging him under. He fell limp against Laelius, his heart still beating softly but his body no longer shaking. The patronus had disappeared as soon as he fell unconscious, no where to be seen.

Lia shivered, trembled, shuddered. Her body just couldn't get warm. Though she felt worse for Keanu, who curled against her, pressing against her long winter fur hard, yet his body shook tremors. Keanu shook and shook, not able to warm up. Lia ran hew maw vigorously along him, trying to get the blood to flow, her eyes darting around worriedly. "K-Keanu, it's going to be okay... just stay with me, Keanu, stay with me," Lia begged, stuttering slightly. Keanu went into a coughing fit that should've been loud, yet it was softer then her words, his vocal cords frozen over. Lia's heart thumped rapidly, worrying even more for him. She couldn't lose him after all this, she felt she needed to help him even more, make sure he survived. Lia pressed her he forehead against his mane, listening to his heart, and it stuttered a few times, making Lia more panicked.
Keanu's body tensed up, curling closer to her, and suddenly fell limp. "KEANU!" Lia screeched, frantic, pressing her audits to his chest, and sighing when she heard the familiar beat of his heart. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-da-dum. It stuttered again, and Lia continued her work of running her maw along his body, forcing the blood to move, to not freeze. She cooed softly to him, though she knew he couldn't hear her. The world was getting fuzzy on the edges and Lia forced her eyes open, knowing all was lost if she fell unconscious also. She noticed how his patronus had disappeared, and she panicked more, tears falling on her face. The owl hooted, shifting over so it lay across Keanu completely, trying to warm his chest. Lia pulled Keanu further against her, trying to warm him as much as she could. She laid her neck across his withers, hoping he would be alright, and come back into consciousness.
Lia's eyes drooped, and she struggled against them, forcing the darkness away from her, shoving, straining, and all it did was gain inch by inch. Creeping in from the sides. Lia fought silently against it, her movements becoming slower and slower. The owl hooted, or more like squeaked, in fear, almost faded away completely. It scrambled on her back, trying to wake her more. Lia shook her head, running her maw along Keanu again, yet it was weak, and her muzzle shook in strain. The owl squeaked, trying to lift it's wings, yet only falling over. Lia's head slumped against Keanu's back, and she blinked, the darkness taking advantage and slowly creeping in. Lia strained against it, having a silent war in her head as it cackled, barely pushing against her weak attempts, wanting her to suffer, to know what was happening. Lia screamed silently, fighting against it. It pushed against her, clouding her eyes. She struggled, she wasn't going to give in. She strained against it, while her body remained unmoving. The owl tweaked, fading until it was almost gone, angering Lia more. She pushed back, and it only grew stronger, feeding on her fear and weakness. Lia wouldn't give up though. She lay there for hours, as she fought against the darkness, which was now pushing back against her with full force, annoyed. No. She would not let Keanu die. She pushed harder, and it retracted ever so slightly, growling. Lia slashed at it, trying hard, she would've let it consume her, but she felt responsible for Keanu's life. If only she hadn't scared him when he was walking along the river. If she had taken a different path, if one little thing in her life was different, she wouldn't of smelt Keanu, wouldn't of tried to go see him, wouldn't of scared him so he slipped and fell into the gushing river. She should've ignored the scent, should've gone on, forever an outcast.
The darkness shoved, and Lia stumbled back, her thoughts preoccupied by guilt. It cackled, advancing, and Lia pondered letting it consume her, take her under, yet she felt herself spring up and run the meet it, struggling once again. Da--dum. Da---dum. Da--- [/i] Her own heart, freezing, and she pushed back as hard as she could, she would not go under. The darkness screeched, receding, and her eyelids fluttered, the owl growing brighter by the slightest. Yet, the darkness would not allow her to move, and her body shook, straining against it, the owl shifting against her back, filling her with tingling heat, which pushed the darkness further back, and it screeched furiously, the battle it thought it was going to win, it was now losing. Losing. An I will win[/i] Lia thought furiously, pounding and struggling to lock the darkness away. Her breathing became labored, strained, her eyes fluttering again. The darkness growled, scratching and clawing it's way, trying to force her under. One slip and it would be over. Lia forced herself forward, slashing out at it, and her eyes forced their way open, lazy and clouded over. She blinked, and the darkness screamed, trying to fight its way against her. Yet she would not allow it, gaining strength little by little. It was dark outside, shadowing everything in the cave, and Lia could still hear the wind. When would this end? This was insane, would nature ever stop torturing them? Lia doubted it, yet it was unfair. Completely unfair. Yet, life was unfair, and Lia had experienced it first hand from the day she was born. Always being ignored, called a freak, unstable, ungrateful, not-suitable for friends. A total outcast, all because of her damn parents. Anger bubbled through her, even just thinking about them, and her eyes turned a harsh red, and the darkness retracted, fearing her sudden outburst of anger, and it was whisked away. The owl appeared again, hooting in glee and standing upright. Lia shifted, lifting her neck off of Keanu and starting to run her maw along his pelt again, scooting closer to him and cooing, hoping he would wake soon. She had just fought the darkness for hours, maybe even days! Because she felt guilty, guilty for Keanu's life, and all she wanted was for him to be okay.[/center] . 1083 Words

He floated, all sense of reality fading away. Was he dying? Was this what it was supposed to feel like? "Keanuu," he heard the voice and suddenly he was standing in the middle of that ruined field from before, the dead grasses cracking in the wind and the scorched trees casting shadows along the ground. He turned slowly, seeing that liver chestnut who loved to visit him in his dreams; his nightmares. That liver chestnut who was a part of his past and he wished would stay there, but never did. He closed his icy blue eyes for a moment, not wanting to speak with her. When had he ever wanted to speak with her? She didn't care, she did as she pleased, even in the afterlife. "Oh Keanu, baby. What mess have you gotten yourself into now?" She shook her head, clicking her tongue at him. "I thought I taught you better than that, baby." His ears pinned at the term. He was not her baby. "Falling into rivers, getting chased by bears, blizzards?" She shook her head, stepping closer. "And then you have this mare with you. Poor choice you have made. You didn't even kill that other one, in that cave." She made a disgusted noise and Keanu narrowed his eyes. "I am not the killer you wish I was, Ember." He spit her name, his voice hissing the word. He was not a killer. That he could convince himself. It was the hurting part. He was always hurting others it seemed. Some part left over, not disappearing. A section of the killing that he had been taught, endlessly remaining to give Ember some satisfaction. She smiled at him, as if sensing his thoughts.
Laelius suddenly appeared, or rather they both did. He could see his own body laying next to hers, and she tried to warm him. His limp self just laying there. Ember stepped towards her, sneering. "Please don't tell me that you actually feel something for this creature." She rolled her eyes at his confused expression. Feel something for her? He barely knew her! They met... barely a day ago? Maybe two? And they had been filled with nothing but disasters. Ember suddenly laughed and Keanu jumped. "At least you could have some fun with her, I suppose," she said, grinning as her nostrils flared. "Such a sweet, sweet smell, Keanu. Would you care to give me a little tyke to teach again. As I taught you?" She smiled but Keanu's expression hardened. He hadn't really noticed it before, but he didn't really like the smell that lingered in the air. While, with other stags it was like liquor to their low tolerances. Ember smiled again, stepping back to Keanu, looming next to him. "Would you do that for me, son?" She whispered, then laughed, twirling away from him. "I am not your son," he said, with enough force that he mumbled the words in his sleep. He was not her son. He wasn't. She laughed again, disappearing and leaving him alone.
He took a deep breath, turning to look at Lia and himself, laying in the shelter. Did he feel something for her? He hadn't really thought about it, what with everything that had been happening, but now that Ember had brought it, his mind lingered on the subject. He thought of her as a friend, at least, she had saved his life on more than one occasion. Did she feel something for him? She couldn't possibly. But as he saw her trying to warm his body, he couldn't help but wonder... Or was it just because she didn't want to see him die, as she had claimed before? He shook his head softly; he was putting way too much thought into what Ember had said.
He fell suddenly, through the ground and into darkness once again, drifting like before. Was he dying now? He had started to believe that he wasn't going to, that death hadn't claimed him yet. But now, as he floated, he couldn't help but think that he was wrong. "Keanu.!" He heard someone say, turning to see a white form loping towards him. The darkness faded into a solid world around him; grass beneath his feet and a sky high above him. The creature came closer and Keanu gulped, turning and stepping to the side as he realized who it was that was moving towards him. It was his brother, Nahele, and his face held an angry expression. The older brother came barreling toward him and Keanu was barely able to step out of the way as he passed, turning quickly and planting his feet. "Oh, brother, how I despise you..." He snorted, eyes narrowing at Keanu and he shrunk back. It was strange how he was afraid of both Ember and Nahele, yet he was afraid of the love Ember seemed to have for him, and the hatred Nahele held onto. "Nahele," he said in acknowledgment, though he sneered in response, giving Keanu an evil glare. Keanu didn't know what would happen in this particular instance. For all he knew, Nahele was still alive, so he couldn't possibly truly be visiting him as Ember did. Perhaps this was just a figment of his imagination; though who was to say that the instances with Ember weren't either? Everything only being a dream, a way for his mind to work things out even if they felt so real. He certainly didn't know. His thoughts had gotten away from him and he turned, realizing that Nahele had been talking and was finishing whatever he had been saying. "It was all your fault." Then he suddenly jumped forward, slamming a hoof into his head and Keanu was drifting again.
"Keanu! Keanu!" He winced, the sun burning into his eyelids as he turned, tilting his head into the shadows. "Oh, there you are!" He heard someone say and he moaned softly, his head still throbbing where the dream-Nahele had struck him. "I've been looking everywhere! Come on, mister, she's asking for you. This might be it!" Keanu opened his eyes, seeing someone he didn't know standing over him, their expression somewhat excited as they waited for him to stand. He did so and they quickly turned, not bothering to wait for him. He followed though, matching the pace. What as going on? What dream was this? "Oh! Keanu! Thank g-" The voice was interrupted by a sound of pain and he turned, eyes wide and searching for the source. He saw the silvery brown figure among the grasses, white markings splattered across her pelt. He jogged forward, stopping beside the mare's head; which was connected to a bloated and heaving stomach. "Keanu, darling, the baby's coming," she said, smiling and he was utterly confused. "Lia? What...?" And then he was falling again, straight through the ground.
This time he returned to his body, the present rushing up to meet him. He remained asleep for a few moments, snuggling up again the body that continued to try to warm him, tracing circles along his pelt. She was soft and he wanted to continue to lay there, but awareness was looming just over out of reach and he was slowly surfacing into consciousness once again. "Lia?" He murmured, his voice soft, the dream still mingled in his mind. He didn't understand it, he had never had dreams like that before. They were always memories, or nightmares of sorts, never something that was supposed to be so happy. Though, the thought of what Ember had said before colored the dream differently. He shifted, eyelids flickering as he started to wake. He coughed, this time the sound loud in his ears. He shook his head, rolling his shoulders as he twisted around, turning to look at her. "You look tired," he said, noticing how she fought against her eyelids, trying to stay awake. "You shouldn't have stayed awake. Gosh, I'm sorry I'm such a bother," he whispered, shaking his head slowly. His skin was warming, the owl patronus laying over him. It had helped some, and he wasn't shivering any longer, though he was still cool and he was sure you could see the veins under his pale skin. "You should sleep," he said softly, his own tired eyes staring into her struggling ones. If it made her feel better, he would remain awake, though he was fairly certain that nothing would be appearing out in this storm to hurt them. He exhaled, touching his nose to her shoulder in encouragement. Memories of his dream flashed through his mind, and he wondered what they could possibly mean. He pulled away, smiling slightly as he twisted his head, laying it onto the floor. What did it mean? It had to mean something, right?

You surprisingly find feather earrings and two bone piercings located in a hole in a tree in a nearby clearing. Using your teeth you careful extract the presents, wondering where in the world they could've come from. Did someone stash them here many years ago? Or do the gods just favor you today? It doesn't matter! Finders, keepers! How you divide them may become an issue!

Keanu remained motionless. Unmoving, still, cold, yet she could hear his heart beat feebly. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. Da-dum. She huffed, still fighting her lids to stay open. 'I am not your son.' Words bubbled from Keanu's lips, and Lia glanced at him, surprised. What? 'I am not your son'? What was that supposed to mean? "K-Keanu?" No answer. Nothing, he was silent again. He shifted harshly, his legs thrashing the rocky ground, his sharp hooves cutting through the dirt underneath. Lia retracted in surprise, her mouth could of hung open. What was going on? Was he okay? Had.. the darkness trapped him? He fell limp again, and she pulled him closer, continuing running her maw across his silky cool pelt, his veins showing through slightly against his cremello pelt. She sighed, worry flashing through her purple eyes. He thrashed again, and shifted, turning his back away from her, and one of his hooves contacted with a dull thud, against her shoulder. She winced, pulling away in fear. He fell still again, breathing deeply, mumbling, anger coursing through his voice. She got up cautiously, eyeing him before moving around him and curling up around him again, rubbing her maw along his neck and shoulder, trying to sooth him. He continued to mumble, words and jumbled up sentences, and Lia was unsure of what he was saying, only barely hearing her name vaguely.
'Lia?' Keanu's voice, soft, murmured. He coughed, loud this time and twisted his shoulders and back, turning to look at her. 'You look tired, you shouldn't have stayed awake. Gosh, I'm sorry I'm such a bother,' he whispered, shaking his head, slight pain ringing through his voice. Lia shook her cranium, nosing his cheek. "Keanu. No. I-" Lia didn't know what to say. What, I was fighting the 'darkness'? I didn't want to lose you? I feel responsible for your life? No, no, no, no. It was all stupid. 'You should sleep,' he said, touching his soft maw to her shoulder, and she relaxed slightly, giving him a smile. She was afraid, the darkness prowling in the back of her mind, ready to pounce as she was asleep and vulnerable. She shuddered slightly, yet tried to hide it by shifting her legs, letting the blood flow more easily to them. She gave him another small smile, her shoulder slightly aching, yet she said nothing about it, knowing he didn't mean to, and that he would feel horrible. It wasn't his fault.
She rested her head across his back, glancing at the opening of the shelter. The snow was starting to thin, the wind not as harsh, only blowing small puffs off snow around. The sun was poking out between the clouds, starting to melt some of the snow. Spring was near, and songs from a few birds reached her ears, and she could already feel the temperature start to rise. She didn't want to sleep, even though her body ached for it. The wind had stopped, and the snow rested upon the ground, growing soft in the new heat. Lia raised her head, pushing herself up. She looked at Keanu, "Wanna go out and stretch your legs? And hope something else doesn't happen?" Lia said, a small laugh forming from her velvety lips. She took a step out of the rocky shelter, stretching her long legs and sighing, lowering her head to the slushy ground. She nosed the snow, watching it melt away before her gold eyes. She kicked at it, spraying some onto Keanu jokingly, and laughed, rocking back and cantering forward, running into a white blanket of a wide clearing. She kicked up the snow, leaving small hoof prints behind her. A small giggle escaped her, and she stuck her muzzle into the snow, before pulling it back up and sneezing. She cantered around the clearing, before reaching where she had started, and stopping in front of Keanu, a her eyes twinkling happily. Nothing bad so far. So far. Lia shook the thought away, before spraying Keanu with more snow and cantering off, laughing. She sunk down into the snow, stuck, and laughed, pulling her legs slowly, trying to release herself. She had never had this much fun. Despite all the disasters, she was now having fun... in the snow. Sunlight filtered down upon her back, and she smiled, watching the owl soar above her, hooting happily. A small glint caught her eye, and she glanced over at it, before trotting over towards a rough tree. Snow brushed the snow away from the opening and looked inside. Delicate feather earrings and bone piercings lay inside. "Keanu, look!" Lia said, carefully reaching her maw inside and grasping the earrings first, before grabbing the sharp bone piercings and laying them upon the snow. Where had they come from? Had they been stashed away? And now, luck was finally starting to come to them.
Keanu approached, and Lia glanced at him. "Where do you think they came from?" Lia asked curiously, looking at the small presents. "What do you think? One of each?" Lia asked cheerfully, her eyes turning into emeralds, happy with their find. She looked at the beautifully sculpted pieces, a large array of colorful feathers from each earring and beautiful design on each piercing. She lowered herself into the cold snow, still pondering where they could of come from. Lia grasped one of the beautiful earrings, which had an array of bright colors with beautiful designs, lush and delicate. She was unsure of how to apply it to herself and set it in front of herself, before grabbing one of the piercings. She set it next to the earring, before standing up and glancing at Keanu, wondering if he might know how. She smiled, nosing his neck before looking at the presents again. "These are amazing, very beautiful." Lia said, looking down at them. "Do you know how to, uhm, apply them to yourself?" Lia asked, a little embarrassed, glancing at Keanu once again.

Lia had started to say something, but stopped. He eyed her questioningly but shrugged it off. It had sounded like another reassurance and he didn't particularly want to hear it. He was a bother; to himself, to everyone. It didn't matter what someone else said to make him think it wasn't true. They were just being nice. He was a complete and total, hopeless mess. He was afraid of fire, terrified; he reacted badly to the cold, his thin skin and lack of winter fur causing him to not be able to truly survive in such an extreme temperature. His mind was completely shot, his anxiety and fears frying it to the point of no return, fear coating everything that he did, just about. Any movement someone or something made would make him flinch, for the fear of sudden movements and that pain might follow that movement. It was a horrible cycle he was stuck in. He never stayed in one place long enough to grow accustomed to the changes and movements of the creatures around him; or even the people. He was just lost in a world that he was afraid of. Though, sitting in this small shelter with a somewhat friendly face didn't seem too bad, it only made him think about how long it would be until he was afraid again, until something bad happened and he lost the ability to think straight. Until he did something he regretted. It never failed. It had happened in the West and he had almost killed Song.. he still had no idea if his attempts to keep her alive had worked. He glanced over at Lia and then away again. What if the same thing happened? He didn't think she would attack him like Song had...but what if he just broke? He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, the pain accompanied with that thought almost like a physical blow. He couldn't let that happen again. He wouldn't.
Keanu felt Laelius lay her head across his back. He sighed softly, her body warming him a little more with their closeness. He glanced back at her, seeing that she was looking to the outside world. He turned his head, looking in that direction as well. The snow had stopped falling, an eerie calm setting over everything now that the wind had ceased. The snow that remained on the ground seemed to glow, reflecting the sunlight and throwing it back into the air, ice crystals sparkling against the seemingly smooth surface. This snow was untouched, freshly fallen and blow around to appear like soft fluff. A single bird sang out, followed by a few other brave souls, exiting their tree homes and setting out into the calm world. Spring must be near. He felt relief at this conclusion, wishing for the warmth and humidity that came with the coming season. He much preferred it to the scorching heat of the Summer, the bone-chilling cold of the Winter, and even the cool, windy days of Autumn. Springtime was filled with rainy days, and while the temperature were still chilly, there was always the humidity to make it feel warmer, and the promise of more warmth as the year grew older. The flowers would start to bloom one again, the grass growing tall from the soft dirt, and the trees filling with life. Spring was definitely the best time of the year.
He felt Lia move, lifting her head off of his back and rising to her feet. He turned, looking up at her, finding that her eyes were on him already. "Wanna go out and stretch your legs? And hope something else doesn't happen?" She laughed, and he couldn't help but smile in return. If something else happened, he wouldn't know what to do. So much had happened already...what else could? Lia had turned, stepping out into the snow. He twisted on the ground, pulling his legs under himself and pushing up into a standing position. It couldn't hurt, and considering all that had happened, they definitely wouldn't be surprised by anything any more. He jumped as he felt some of the slush hit his side, turning to see Lia laugh before loping off. He snorted softly, shaking his head and causing the snow to slide away. He lowered his head, nosing the substance. It was cold against his nose and he pulled back, rubbing his muzzle against his leg. Laelius was playing in the fluff, cantering around and sticking her nose into it. He didn't understand how the cold white substance could be so entertaining. He definitely had never played in it when he was young, his time was spent doing much more.. supposedly important things than this. Was that what you did in the snow? Run around in it? He couldn't help but think you would even up wet and shivering once you were finished. Not really something he would like.
Lia loped back around, stopping in front of him. She seemed to be enjoying the snow, now that it wasn't beating at them with icy points, pushed around because of the wind. She kicked up more snow, spraying it across him before quickly turning and laughing as she ran off. He snorted again, shaking; the snow flying off of him. He couldn't help but chuckle softly, the laughter was infectious. He watched as she ran, her patronus gliding above her. He smiled softly, wondering if the snow held some sort of happy memories for her. Bad, bad bad bad. Keanu jumped, twisting his head to look at his own patronus, that had finally appeared again. He narrowed his eyes at the creature, sensing the awful feeling that was wafting off of it. "What?" he whispered, confused at the creature's tone. Bad bad bad. Must leave. Pretty lady clouding Keanu-thoughts. It shook it's head, obviously unhappy. Keanu snorted, his ears pinning. "That is most certainly not true," he replied, glaring at the ghostly figure. It wasn't though, he was thinking clearly. He couldn't help but wonder what exactly the axolotl meant though, as the creature disappeared from view, angry with him. He brushed the thoughts away though. He was fine, no clouding of his thoughts were happening, except possibly by fear now and again. Laelius certainly wasn't doing anything.
He turned at the sound of his name, trotting over to where Lia was standing. "Where do you think they came from? What do you think? One of each?" Keanu shrugged, eying the objects cautiously. The items were strange, the feathers of vibrant color and the bone sections carved with designs inlaid on them. Lia lowered herself to the ground, handling the objects before setting the aside. He had no idea where they could have come from, they weren't something he had ever seen before. He lowered his head, looking at them. They were strange; unnatural. He wasn't sure... Lia rose back to her feet and he lifted his head, still staring at the items. She nosed his neck and he glanced at her, the casual touch surprising him. Thoughts of his patronus loomed in his mind; his dreams, that meadow.. Ember's laugh. He pushed them away though; it had only been a simple touch, why the hell was his mind over thinking it? It didn't make any sense. Maybe his patronus was right... "These are amazing, very beautiful. Do you know how to, uhm, apply them to yourself?" Keanu nodded, then shook his head. They were nice, but her didn't know how to put them on, assuming that's what you did. "I'm not sure...but upon first glance I would say you would..stick yourself with it?" His tone was questioning as he looked at the objects, eying the sharp points on the feathers. That was the only thing that made some sense, even if the idea wasn't particularly appealing.
